Tear-off and new deck
Farmhouse with a wraparound porch
Two layers of old shingle hid a deck that had gone soft along the eaves. We replaced 22 sheets, added ice shield to the porch roof and matched the grey to the siding.

The brief
A second layer of shingle had been nailed over the first sometime in the 1990s. Every winter since, ice had built up along the porch roof and the eaves over the kitchen, and the owners had started to see the fascia bow.
They asked for a straight price for a new roof and a clear answer on the deck, because two other quotes had left the deck as an open-ended extra.

(The result)
How it turned out
The deck line is straight again and the fascia over the kitchen has stopped bowing. With intake at the soffits and exhaust at the ridge, the attic now runs within a few degrees of the outside air, which is what stops ice dams before they start. The owners chose Pewter Grey on the day, holding three bundles up against the siding.
