Signs your gutters are the problem
Gutters are the cheapest part of the roof system and the part that does the most damage when it fails, usually to fascia, siding and foundations rather than the roof itself.
Water sheeting over the front edge
Undersized gutters, too few downspouts or a blocked outlet. Watch them in a heavy rain.
Pulling away from the fascia
Spike-and-ferrule fixings loosen over time. Hidden hangers screw into the rafter tails.
Leaking seams and corners
Sectional gutters have a joint every 10 feet. Seamless gutters have joints only at corners.
Damp basement or eroded beds
Downspouts dumping water right beside the foundation.
Peeling paint or rot on fascia
Water getting behind the gutter, often from missing drip edge.
Ice along the eaves
Gutters full of ice in winter usually point to attic heat loss. See ventilation.

Sizing: 5 inch or 6 inch?
We size gutters to the roof area each run drains and how steep it is, not to what was there before. Steep roofs shed water faster, so they count as bigger.

Old gutters, spikes and downspouts taken away. Fascia checked for rot and priced if it needs replacing.

Seamless runs rolled from coil on our truck to the exact length. Joints only at the corners.
- 03Hidden hangers
Screwed into the rafter tails every 24 inches, rated for snow and ladders.
- 04Correct fall
About 1/4 inch per 10 feet toward each outlet, checked with a level before the hangers go tight.
- 05Downspouts that clear the house
Extensions or splash blocks to take water at least 4 feet from the foundation. Underground drains to daylight priced separately.
- 06Guards where trees overhang
Micro-mesh guards on runs under trees, fitted under the first shingle course so they do not void the roof warranty.

Only where trees overhang the roof. Guards cut cleaning to once every few years, but they are not maintenance-free, and on open roofs they are money you do not need to spend.
Aluminium or copper?
Aluminium in one of our 14 colours suits almost every house and lasts 20 to 30 years. Copper costs four to five times as much, weathers to brown and then green, and lasts 50 years or more. We use it mostly on slate and period homes.
Can you replace gutters without touching the roof?
Yes. If the drip edge is missing or the roof is near replacement, we will tell you, because it is cheaper to do both together.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
Twice a year under trees, once a year elsewhere, and after big storms. See the autumn roof check in our roof notes.
